Milan - At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, a curious and controversial incident occurred on the sidelines of the women's ice hockey semi-final between the USA and Sweden. At the center of the events is a 12-year-old schoolboy who wanted to attend the game at the Santa Giulia Arena in Milan with his classmates. The boy was stopped at the security check at the entrance when the security guards discovered a European Union flag in his rucksack.
The EU flag as an alleged political symbol
The security staff confiscated the blue banner with the yellow stars on the grounds that it was a political symbol in accordance with the Olympic Charter. According to the strict guidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), fans are not allowed to display symbols that do not represent a recognized nation. In this context, the EU flag was seen as a political statement that was not welcome in the stands. The boy was later given the flag back, but only on the strict condition that it was not to be unfurled or displayed during the entire sporting event.
Political criticism and official apology
The incident triggered a wave of outrage in Italian politics. Representatives of parties such as „Azione“ and „Italia Viva“ sharply criticized the action. Carlo Calenda described the action as „unacceptable and immoral“ and accused those responsible of having lost their minds. It was paradoxical that the EU flag was flown in front of all public buildings in the city but had to be hidden in the stadium.
The Milan-Cortina 2026 Foundation reacted promptly to the growing criticism. In an official statement, the organizers deeply regretted the incident. They acknowledged that the situation had been handled incorrectly, as the EU flag was by no means on the list of prohibited items. Andrea Francisi, the foundation's operational director, has already sought a direct conversation with the boy's father in order to apologize personally and announce a small compensation.
