Anguillara Sabazia - Hopes of finding Federica Torzullo, who has been missing since January 8, alive were dashed on Sunday. Carabinieri forces discovered the body of the 41-year-old postal worker buried in a reed bed not far from her home in Anguillara Sabazia. Her husband, Claudio Carlomagno, was arrested the same day on suspicion of murder.
Horrific find on the company premises
The breakthrough in the investigation came on Sunday morning after an intensive search that had kept the whole of Italy on tenterhooks for days. After divers had initially searched the bottom of nearby Lake Bracciano, the Carabinieri officers finally concentrated on the husband's business premises in Via Comunale di San Francesco. There, hidden behind the business premises, the emergency services discovered the woman's lifeless body while digging.
According to reports from investigators, the identity of the deceased was initially confirmed on the basis of her clothing and personal belongings. Formal identification and an autopsy at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at La Sapienza University in Rome will now clarify the exact cause of death. Federica Torzullo, who worked at the postal center in Fiumicino, leaves behind a ten-year-old son who lived with the couple in a villa on the outskirts of Anguillara.
Traces of blood and contradictory statements
The evidence against the husband had already come to a head in the run-up to the trial. The public prosecutor's office in Civitavecchia spoke of incriminating evidence that was secured at numerous locations. Experts from the RIS special unit found blood residue in the shared home, in the accused's vehicle, on his work clothes and on heavy construction machinery on his company premises.
The analysis of the surveillance cameras around the family home was particularly incriminating. While the husband had only reported his wife's disappearance on January 9, the video recordings proved that Federica had never left the house again after the evening of January 8. The suspect's lawyer stated that his client had intended to turn himself in to the authorities but had been prevented from doing so by the arrest. Claudio Carlomagno has since been taken to the detention center in Civitavecchia.
