The Drug Jungle in Calabria
Stilo – In the rugged terrain of the Stilaro Valley, the Carabinieri have dealt a significant blow to organized drug cultivation. In the rural areas of Stilo, in the province of Reggio Calabria, officers discovered and dismantled a massive cannabis plantation containing approximately 1,200 plants.
The plantation was professionally laid out and strategically hidden within the dense vegetation. It stretched across several rows in a hard-to-reach area. It was only after an extensive search operation by the local Carabinieri station, supported by an operational unit from Roccella Jonica, that the hideout was located.
A complex irrigation system supplied water to the plants, indicating intensive and well-organized cultivation. According to investigators, criminal groups deliberately exploit the remoteness of the Locride region to run an extremely profitable illegal drug-growing operation. All the plants were uprooted on site and seized.
