Rome – After days on the run, the Carabinieri have apprehended a 53-year-old man. He is strongly suspected of stabbing a man at a gym in Rome on June 11.
The attack took place around 8:55 a.m. at a sports center on Via Casilina. After a brief verbal altercation, the 53-year-old allegedly pulled an object from his backpack and stabbed his victim in the left side with it. Immediately after the incident, the attacker fled in his car and went into hiding.
The victim was brought to the emergency room at Policlinico Casilino with a severe stab wound. Immediate surgery saved his life.
Investigators analyzed video footage
The Carabinieri immediately launched an investigation. They reviewed footage from security cameras inside and outside the gym and interviewed the staff. This enabled the officers to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the suspect.
Since the man had fled immediately, remained in hiding for days, and had previously attempted to evade the authorities, there was a high risk that he would flee. The Carabinieri intensified their search. During house searches, they found clothing that closely resembled that worn by the suspect.
The pressure from the manhunt apparently became too much for the suspect. On the afternoon of June 17, he intended to turn himself in at Rebibbia Prison, accompanied by his lawyer. But the Carabinieri beat him to it: they located the man, intercepted him, and took him to the police station. The Rome Public Prosecutor’s Office ordered his transfer to Regina Coeli Prison, where he is now awaiting further judicial decisions.
The accused is presumed innocent until a final judgment is rendered.
