Rome - At a time of high tension in the Middle East, several groups of Israeli soldiers have chosen Italy as their destination for a rest break. The stays of IDF members seeking a break from the stress of intense combat operations in Gaza are taking place under the careful watch of Italian security forces and have already sparked initial protests and political debate.
Surveillance and protection as "sensitive targets"
From the Marche coast to popular vacation resorts in Sardinia, the soldiers spend their time off. Due to the Gaza war and the pro-Palestinian mobilizations in Europe, they are classified as "sensitive targets" by the authorities. According to informed sources, they are therefore constantly monitored by members of the Digos special unit to ensure their safety. However, it is emphasized that these are not official, protected delegations, but discreet surveillance of tourists who could be exposed to a potential risk. Italy was chosen as it is considered a friendly and safe country.
Protests and political reactions
However, the presence of the soldiers has not gone unnoticed and is causing controversy. In Santa Teresa di Gallura in Sardinia, for example, pro-Palestinian activists have been protesting in front of some hotels in recent days. In the Marche region, more precisely on the coast of Fermo, other groups of soldiers have reportedly been accommodated in private apartments rather than hotels for reasons of discretion. The case has now also reached national politics: the Five Star Movement has announced that it intends to submit a parliamentary question on the circumstances of the stays.
