Naples/Caserta - The Carabinieri are continuing their fight against environmental crime in the so-called „Terra dei Fuochi“ (Land of Fire). Targeted checks in the provinces of Naples and Caserta have led to one arrest and numerous charges of illegal waste disposal and receiving stolen goods in the last few hours. The operations focused on Giugliano in Campania, Castel Volturno, Mondragone and other municipalities.
Arrest in Giugliano and charges in Caserta
In Giugliano (province of Naples), the carabinieri arrested a 23-year-old man. He was caught red-handed in a remote area while dismantling a stolen car. According to the investigators, the young man selected the recyclable parts for sale and simply left the unusable remnants at the place where they were found. He is accused of recycling (of stolen goods), receiving stolen goods and illegal waste disposal. He is now under house arrest by order of the judiciary.
The checks also focused on several municipalities in the province of Caserta. In Castel Volturno, a 37-year-old man was charged with unauthorized waste management. The officers found piles of iron material, a vehicle loaded with metal and electrical scrap and two buildings used illegally as workshops on an agricultural property measuring around 100 square meters. The site and the vehicle were confiscated.
In Falciano del Massico, a 55-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were reported after a wrecked car and three old tires were discovered near their home. A similar case occurred in Francolise: a 49-year-old man is accused of disposing of hazardous waste in his 2,000 square meter field. Nine wrecked cars and various pieces of plastic and metal waste were found there.
In Mondragone and Castel Volturno, the carabinieri came across more illegal garbage dumps where bulky waste, furniture, fridges, building rubble and sanitary facilities had been illegally dumped. All the confiscated areas were handed over to the responsible mayors, who must now initiate the clean-up (bonifica).
