Vieste - On the night of February 17, the carabinieri of the Tenenza of Vieste (province of Foggia) arrested two people. They were caught red-handed in an attempted grand theft in a tobacco store in the town center.
Alarm and chase
The operation was triggered by a report to the operations center about a burglary in progress. A patrol, which was already on its way to check the area, reached the reported location within a few minutes and surprised the perpetrators while they were still committing the crime. When the military police officers arrived, a young man standing on the lookout outside tried to warn his accomplices inside the store.
This led to a frantic attempt to escape. Two of the people were immediately blocked after a short pursuit. They resisted and started a scuffle with the carabinieri. A third accomplice managed to escape; the search for identification is still ongoing.
Property damage and injuries
As subsequent investigations revealed, the perpetrators had gained access to the premises after breaking open the roller shutter. There they damaged some slot machines with an electric tool in order to steal the money inside. The tools used for the break-in were confiscated.
The operation is part of the Carabinieri's wider control measures against property crime. Thanks to the rapid intervention, the crime was interrupted. Two carabinieri and one of the detainees suffered minor injuries during the operation, which are expected to heal in a few days.
