Gunshots and a fistfight in broad daylight
Carovigno – Scenes straight out of an action movie unfolded Wednesday afternoon in the center of Carovigno, in the province of Brindisi. Three armed men robbed a cash-in-transit van but were stopped by Carabinieri who intervened in a flash—in some cases, in a fierce fistfight.
The robbery took place in front of the post office on Via Giovanni Pascoli. A group of three men ambushed security guards from the company „Cosmopol“ just as they were about to deliver a large sum of money. At gunpoint, the perpetrators forced the security guards to hand over the money and attempted to flee in a stolen car. One of the security guards then fired several shots at the fleeing perpetrators.
Officers rush out of the station and intervene
The Carabinieri at their station, located in the immediate vicinity, heard the noise and the gunshots. The officers didn’t hesitate for a second; they ran out onto the street and blocked the getaway car. A violent physical altercation ensued between the police and the robbers. Without drawing their weapons, the Carabinieri were able to subdue, disarm, and apprehend two of the perpetrators.
A third accomplice initially managed to escape. He stole another car and sped away. However, a manhunt launched immediately—with reinforcements from Brindisi and San Vito dei Normanni—proved successful. A short time later, he was also apprehended. As it turned out, he had been wounded by one of the security guard’s shots. All three men were arrested, and the entire haul was recovered.
