Ancona - Investigators from the financial police have succeeded in striking a far-reaching blow against the distribution of illegal content. A man was arrested on charges of possessing and distributing an enormous amount of illegal material. The investigation focused on the most serious child pornography, which in some cases bordered on torture, according to the officers.
Investigations and confiscation
The dimensions of the case are considerable: the emergency services seized a digital archive of over two terabytes. This included more than half a million photo and video files. In addition to the arrest of the suspect, numerous computers, smartphones and data carriers were confiscated. The authorities also ordered the blocking of a website and a channel on an unspecified, known communication and social media platform.
The operation was carried out by the G.i.c.o. (Economic and Financial Police Unit) in Ancona and coordinated by the local public prosecutor's office. The investigations had already begun several months ago. State-of-the-art investigative technologies and specialists in digital forensics and data analysis were used.
Sophisticated criminal network
According to the investigators, the accused had systematically organized the gigantic amount of data in a highly branched folder structure. The man was involved in criminal networks that used the Internet for the systematic exchange of files. He used peer-to-peer technologies and various technical methods to conceal his identity and surfing data.
In this context, the financial police pointed out that digital development facilitates the spread of such crimes, as it creates limitless platforms for contact with victims and for the production and sharing of child pornography. However, the current case clearly shows that access to such networks is not without consequences. Every user leaves behind digital traces that can be analyzed by the authorities using modern means and prosecuted under criminal law. An exact name of the perpetrator, his age or exact origin were not given in the official statement.
