Ciminà - An almost invisible hiding place, wedged between the stones of a dry stone wall in Ciminà (province of Reggio Calabria), deep in the rugged and impassable heart of the Aspromonte. It was here that the carabinieri of the Sant'Ilario dello Jonio station, supported by the special Cacciatori „Calabria“ airborne unit, discovered an illegal depot and dealt another serious blow to the illegal arms trade.
Ingenious hiding place in state-owned premises
The discovery was made as part of targeted controls to combat organized and general crime. During an intensive search operation in a state-run area that was difficult to access, the military came across an ingenious system: a plastic tube carefully concealed in the wall served as a secret compartment that was completely invisible to untrained eyes.
Ready-to-use arsenal
Inside the tube was a small arsenal consisting of two rifles - one of which was handmade - and around 50 rounds of ammunition of various calibers. All of the material was in excellent and fully functional condition. This detail leads the investigators to assume that the weapons had only recently been deposited there and were possibly intended for operational use in the near future.
The discovery underlines once again that the rural areas of Aspromonte continue to be used as strategic locations for concealing illegal weapons and instruments. Investigations by the relevant judicial authorities are currently in full swing to identify those responsible and clarify possible links to organized crime in the Locride region.
