Reggio Calabria - The Carabinieri celebrated their 212th anniversary this morning with an impressive ceremony. For the first time, the central celebration took place in Reggio Calabria, directly on the famous Falcomatà waterfront promenade. The event was attended by the entire head of state, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Carabinieri, General Salvatore Luongo, and the Chief of the Defense Staff, Luciano Portolano, were also present, along with numerous other representatives from politics, the military and society. June 5 is a historic date for the Carabinieri: on this day in 1920, the troops were awarded the first gold medal for bravery for their service in the First World War.
Parachutists and anti-terror unit in action
The celebrations began at 10:15 a.m. with a spectacular parachute jump by the sports section of the 1st Carabinieri Paratrooper Regiment „Tuscania“. Representative units from the various Carabinieri organizations then paraded. A moving moment was the oath of allegiance of the young candidates of the 144th cadet course of Reggio Calabria, who ceremoniously received their „Alamari“, the characteristic collar patches.
A parade of historic and modern Carabinieri vehicles was followed by the highlight for the spectators: a tactical demonstration by the special unit GIS (Gruppo Intervento Speciale). The elite soldiers simulated the storming of a ship, impressively demonstrating their operational readiness. The ceremony ended with the tributes to the state representatives present.
