The Roman Carabinieri have arrested a man who allegedly assaulted a senior civil servant at the Department of Public Works and attempted to kill him. The suspect, a former employee of the victim, is said to have ordered the attack in October 2024 near Piazza di Spagna. According to the investigators, the motive was professional animosity, as the arrested man had been demoted by his superior.
The 65-year-old officer was attacked with blows from a stick and robbed of his bag. Further investigations by the Carabinieri led to the suspicion that the former employee had ordered the attack from an acquaintance.
During searches, considerable amounts of cash were found on the arrested man: initially 80,000 euros and later a further 46,000 euros, including suspected counterfeit money. The money bore no relation to his income and is believed to be of illegal origin.
The man was taken to Regina Coeli prison. He is presumed innocent until a final conviction is handed down.
