Modena - A shocking family drama rocked the municipality of Castelnuovo Rangone in the province of Modena late on Friday evening. At around 10 pm, a young man attacked his own family with a knife, seriously injuring his 50-year-old father, his 42-year-old mother and his 15-year-old sister. The perpetrator was arrested by the Carabinieri shortly after the attack without resistance.
All three victims were immediately taken to hospital. While the father was taken to the Maggiore Clinic in Bologna, the mother and teenage sister are being treated at the Baggiovara Hospital in Modena. Their condition is described as critical, but according to current information there is no acute danger to life. The background to the crime is still completely unclear and the Carabinieri have begun an investigation to establish the motive.
Mayor: "A tragedy narrowly avoided"
The mayor of Castelnuovo Rangone, Massimo Paradisi, was deeply saddened by the events. "This is a family drama that has shaken our community and we all stand behind the victims of this narrowly avoided tragedy," said the mayor. The family concerned, of Pakistani origin, are long-time residents of the region. The news that no one's life was in danger was the only relief in this terrible situation, said Paradisi.
