Roccalbegna - During an inspection at a goat farm in Roccalbegna, province of Grosseto, the Carabinieri of the forestry unit and the local health authority (ASL) have uncovered serious violations. Over 130 goats disappeared from the farm without a trace, and 20 more animals were missing any form of identification. The entire farm was placed under an immediate health lockdown.
The inspectors found that the farm, which is run by two agricultural companies, moved numerous animals without documenting this properly. In particular, the record keeping for deceased animals was inadequate, which also indicated improper disposal of the carcasses. Due to the lack of evidence, the traceability of the animals was completely lost.
Danger to food safety
Authorities warn that such practices pave the way for animals to be slaughtered illegally. Without controls, there is a high risk to food safety and animal welfare. Seamless traceability is also intended to prevent fraudulent practices such as the so-called „pasture mafia“, in which EU subsidies are unlawfully obtained.
An administrative fine totaling over 90,000 euros was imposed on the two operating companies. This is the fifth breeding operation in the region to be shut down for similar violations since the beginning of the year. A total of over 400 animals were confiscated.
