Het pittoreske strand van Punta Molentis bij Villasimius is gehuld in een rookwolk. Vermoedelijke brandstichters hebben een inferno veroorzaakt dat zich snel verspreidt en het mediterrane struikgewas overspoelt. De vlammen bereikten zelfs het strand, waar zich dramatische taferelen ontvouwden. Paniekerige badgasten moesten ge\u00ebvacueerd worden in rubberen bootjes, terwijl naar schatting 200 auto's op de parkeerplaatsen door de vlammen werden overspoeld.<\/p>\n<p>De sterke mistralwind wakkert de branden genadeloos aan en maakt het bluswerk aanzienlijk moeilijker. Reddingsteams worden op grote schaal ingezet: brandweerteams, helikopters, Canadair vliegtuigen en waterreddingsspecialisten vechten onvermoeibaar tegen het vuur. De havenautoriteit is gemobiliseerd om een mogelijke evacuatie vanaf zee te ondersteunen. Milieuactivisten betreuren de enorme ecologische schade. Een \u201ejuweel van het milieu\u201c is letterlijk in rook opgegaan.
