On Monday evening, May 26, 2025, a momentous incident occurred in Liverpool city center. Thousands of people had gathered to celebrate Liverpool FC's 20th league title when a vehicle drove into the crowd on Water Street at around 6pm local time. Eyewitnesses described the car as traveling at high speed and heading straight for the crowd.

Videos circulating on social media show the vehicle driving several meters through the crowd before coming to a halt. Bystanders tried to stop the driver, but only succeeded when the police intervened. Several people were injured in the incident; exact numbers were not initially available.

The 53-year-old driver of the car, a British man from the region, was arrested at the scene. The police immediately launched an investigation to establish what had happened and the man's motive. According to initial findings, there were no indications of a terrorist background. Nevertheless, the area was cordoned off and evidence was secured.

Officials are asking the public to be cautious with speculation and are calling on them to pass on any relevant information about the crime or the driver's behavior directly to the investigating authorities in advance. A large number of medical personnel were also deployed to treat the injured.

The incident caused great consternation in the UK. Government representatives praised the swift action of the emergency services and expressed their sympathy for the injured. Liverpool FC also reacted with dismay to the event. The club expressed its solidarity with those affected and pledged its full support in dealing with the incident.

The championship celebrations, which had previously been taking place in an exuberant atmosphere, were abruptly interrupted by the incident. Many visitors left the event prematurely. The police increased their presence in the city center to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of the public.
