SSC Napoli secured the fourth Scudetto in the club's history with a 2:0 victory over Cagliari Calcio - in a final that was hard to beat in terms of excitement. The game took place at the same time as the match between Inter Milan and FC Como, which added to the drama. Both title contenders had to win, and any goal could decide the championship in real time.

Even before kick-off, the city of Naples was in turmoil. Fans flocked to the stadium and filled the squares in the city center to watch the grand finale. Napoli went into the final matchday with a one-point lead over Inter. One thing was clear: a win would secure the championship, everything else would depend on Inter's result. And Inter got going - after 20 minutes the score was 1:0 in the parallel match and Inter were virtual champions at that moment.

The news of the goal quickly made the rounds in Naples. The mood quickly changed and there was a palpable nervousness in the air. Napoli struggled against the deep-lying visitors from Cagliari, but the ball just wouldn't go in the net. It was only shortly before half-time that redemption came: Scott McTominay scored to make it 1:0 following a cross. The stadium exploded. With this result, Napoli were back on course for the title, but it was also clear that nothing had been decided yet.

After the break, Napoli went one better. Romelu Lukaku forced his way through on goal after winning the ball and finished to make it 2-0. It was the goal of relief, the moment when Napoli could finally believe in the championship. Meanwhile, Inter continued to control the game and scored a second goal. But that was not enough, as Napoli did the right thing on the pitch: win.

Scott McTominay was undoubtedly one of the heroes of the evening. Once sidelined as a reserve at Manchester United, he developed into a difference-maker in Naples. With twelve goals this season and numerous other impulses in midfield, he became one of the central figures on the way to the title. It was not only his statistics, but above all his mentality that made him indispensable. He wasn't the loudest, but was often the decisive man in tight games - like on that memorable evening against Cagliari.

Romelu Lukaku also proved to be a real coup in the summer transfer window. With his physical presence, experience and goalscoring ability, he was the perfect addition to the flexible and often combination-heavy attacking play. Together with McTominay, he carried the responsibility and lived up to it. Napoli did not play magical soccer this season, but they were efficient, thoughtful and determined.

However, Antonio Conte, the man on the touchline, stood above it all. Or rather: in the stands, as the coach was suspended for the season finale. Nevertheless, he directed his team with his usual intensity, sent out clear signals and held all the strings in his hand. By winning the title, he became the first coach to win the Serie A title with three different clubs. After Juventus and Inter, Napoli is now also proof of his unique ability to not only improve teams, but to lead them to the top.

Conte had formed a team that was tactically disciplined, physically resilient and mentally stable. The balance between offense and defense was right, the communication between the lines worked and the processes were practiced. Napoli hardly let themselves get rattled this season - neither in phases of setbacks nor when losing points or in the shadow of great expectations.

The lead over Inter was wafer-thin. Milan had played a strong season and showed the best soccer in the league at times. However, they failed due to their own inconsistency in the second half of the season and Napoli's stamina. Inter struggled with the double burden of the Champions League and cup, played significantly more games and often looked tired in the final stages of the season. Even though they won their last league game with aplomb, they were ultimately a single point short.

While Inter won in Como, an emotional final took place in Naples. After the final whistle, the crowd burst into tears. People in the stands were in each other's arms, tears were flowing on the bench and the players were jumping around wildly on the pitch. The fans stormed the streets, set off Bengalos, danced on rooftops and sang the old songs of Maradona and the South. The city was transformed into a pulsating sea of blue.

The last title was still fresh - Napoli had triumphed again in 2023 after decades of drought. But this title felt different. More mature. Harder. And perhaps even more deserved. Because this time it was a tough race against a strong opponent with all the pitfalls of a long season. Napoli had to stand up and prove themselves several times - and they did.

In retrospect, success is the sum of many factors: consistent squad planning with targeted reinforcements, stability thanks to experienced leading players. The calm within the club, which had often been lacking in previous years. And a coach who had the big picture in mind without neglecting the details. The Scudetto was the logical consequence of months of development.

Statistically, Napoli always led the way in the decisive categories: few goals conceded, many decisive goals in the closing stages and a high level of running. The away record was also impressive. The team was flexible enough to adapt to different opponents, but stable enough to never lose sight of its own plan.

Now the focus is on the future. The aim is not only to qualify for the Champions League in the future, but also to assert itself. The foundations for this have been laid - in sporting, structural and emotional terms. The euphoria is great, but it can also be inspiring. The team is young, capable of learning and hungry. If Napoli carry this momentum with them, many things are possible in Europe.

Above all, however, the symbolic power of this title remains. It is the symbol of a club that has worked its way to the top under its own steam. A city that has gone through ups and downs with its club. And a coaching team that has never lost faith in success. Napoli did not inherit the Scudetto, but fought for it - against pressure, against doubt and against the great Milan.

And that is precisely why this May 23rd will be remembered for a long time to come. Not just in Naples, but everywhere where people love soccer because it is more than just a game.

Am Abend des 23.
