Donald Trump announced that Israel was prepared in principle to accept a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. The ball is now in Hamas' court to accept the offer as well. Trump explained that they had negotiated for a long time and wanted to find a solution that would both provide humanitarian aid and create a basis for lasting peace.
Although Hamas was open to talks, it set conditions such as the withdrawal of Israeli troops and an end to all hostilities.
Israel, for its part, expressed restraint and emphasized that any agreement must guarantee the country's security. Should the ceasefire come about, this could facilitate the release of hostages and an expansion of humanitarian aid.
Trump plans to hold further talks with the Israeli government in the coming days to clarify the details of the possible agreement.
