According to both sides, the phone call between Trump and Putin is their sixth publicly known communication since Trump's return to the White House in early 2025.
According to media reports, the conversation took place at around 4 p.m. Central European Time. Trump had previously announced it on his Truth Social platform. According to Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov, the conversation lasted just under an hour.
The central topic was apparently the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Putin reiterated that Russia "will not deviate from its goals". For his part, Trump emphasized his interest in ending the conflict as quickly as possible. However, the conversation coincided with the Pentagon's recent decision to pause the delivery of air defense missiles, precision artillery and other critical weapons to Ukraine for the time being - a move that was met with satisfaction in Moscow.
According to reports from The Guardian newspaper and the Reuters news agency, Iran and the Middle East were also discussed alongside Ukraine. The talks thus reflect the broad-based diplomatic activity on both sides.
Another planned phone call is already scheduled. A conversation between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled for Friday, July 4. The interruption of US arms supplies and its impact on Ukraine's defense will presumably be discussed.
