When winter awakens in Brixen

There are places that withdraw into themselves in winter and fall into a deep sleep. And then there is Brixen. The oldest town in South Tyrol, which lies so proudly in the heart of the Eisack Valley, does not close itself off from the winter cold. Instead, it opens up small, almost imperceptible worlds for all those who take a closer look. Here, where rugged Alpine peaks meet an almost Mediterranean flair, a very special magic unfolds in the cold season. It is a weave of life and tradition that manages without loud words and unfolds its greatest power in silence.

Join us on a journey through a winter's day in Brixen, told through the eyes of six people who bring this time of year to life with their craft and passion.

The rhythm of the morning: of bakeries and snow groomers

05:00: The first light in the bakery

While the city still lies under a thick blanket of deep slumber, a bright light is already burning in Benjamin Profanter's natural bakery. In a world that is spinning ever faster, he relies on deceleration and the ancient language of grain. With flour on his hands and a flair that has matured over generations, he tests the dough. It is a silent dialog between man and natural product. In the cozy warmth of the bakery, the first promise of the day emerges: the aroma of fresh sourdough and traditional shake bread fills the room and defies the clinking glass frost that covers the alleyways outside. For Benjamin, winter begins anew every morning - not with cold, but with the warm, promising breath of his oven.

Daybreak - The silence of the Plose

High above the towers of the city, on the local mountain Plose, Maria Fink steers her Pistenbully, weighing several tons, with surgical precision over the lonely slopes. Before the first skiers conquer the mountain and break the silence with their laughter, the vastness belongs to her alone. Every track she makes in the virgin white is like a calm, almost meditative gesture at dawn. When the sky on the horizon hesitates between a delicate pink and the deep blue of the night, the mountain shows its vulnerable side. In this brief moment before the hustle and bustle begins, the Plose is gentle, intimate and filled with a sublime calm.

In the morning: Between snow-covered fir trees and clever books

The forest that listens

If you are looking for true, unadulterated tranquillity, follow Max Röck into the snow-covered forests around Brixen. Far away from groomed trails, he leads his guests through a landscape that seems to have sprung from a fairy tale overnight. Up here, the silence becomes a tangible, almost physical force. The crunching of snowshoes is the only sound that cuts through the air, while the mighty fir trees seem to hold their breath under their white weight. The sunlight carefully feels its way through the snow-covered branches and casts long, blue shadows on the ground. Every step and every conscious exhalation make everyday life recede into the distance and bring the world a little closer to your own self.

A refuge of words

Back in the valley, in the midst of the architectural symbiosis of old and new, Bruno Kaser guards the quiet brightness in the modern city library. The clear winter light falls through the generous glass fronts onto the warm wooden shelves and creates an atmosphere of security. The library is much more than a place for books; it is a retreat that embraces its visitors like a warm blanket. When Bruno moves a heavy book volume into place or greets the first reader with a knowing nod, it becomes clear that winter does not constrict this room. On the contrary, it makes it wide, soft and a haven for thoughts that often find no place in summer.

Afternoon: History that never sleeps

Just outside the city walls, in the impressive Neustift monastery, you encounter eternity at every turn. For historian Dr. Hanns-Paul Ties, the winter chill in the stone corridors is not an intruder, but a constant reminder of permanence. As he leans over centuries-old, ornately decorated manuscripts in the Abbey Library, the wind blows gently over the old walls of the medieval complex. Almost nine centuries of history of the Augustinian canons accompany his every step. It is a history that never rumbles loudly, but always remains awake and present, embedded in the devout tranquillity of a monastic winter landscape.

The pulse under the arbors

When the daylight slowly fades and dusk bathes the city in a deep blue, the true soul of Bressanone is revealed under the famous medieval arcades. Here you can observe the locals, who know the pulse and rhythm of their city inside out. They glide past the shop windows without any haste, stroking the rough stone of the old arches almost tenderly as they pass, their warm breath dissolving in the gray winter air. In Brixen, winter doesn't force anyone to hurry. It is not a barrier, but a warm invitation to slow down and take in the small details along the way.

6 retreats of hospitality: where the Brixen winter is at its warmest

When the blue hour settles over the Isarco Valley and the cold weather becomes noticeably more intense, travelers look for places that are more than just a roof over their heads - they look for refuges that reflect the spirit of the city and its mountains. High above, where the silence of the forest is almost tangible, sits the Forestis as a temple of mindfulness, whose clear architecture offers an unobstructed view of the pale peaks of the Dolomites. Not far away, the My Arbor A tree hotel that gives its guests the perspective of nature and combines the security of a nest with modern luxury.

However, if you want to feel the pulse of history in your sleep, the traditional Hotel Elephant in the heart of the old town, where emperors and kings have enjoyed Tyrolean hospitality. Just a few steps further on, the Adler Historic Guesthouse elegantly combines the city's historical heritage with a contemporary design approach that celebrates the lightness of modern South Tyrol.

For those who love the view over the expanse of the valley, the Santre dolomythic home in St. Andrä opens its doors and creates a connection between an Alpine lifestyle and an almost Mediterranean generosity. The culinary finale to a journey can be found in Haller's Guesthouse, which lies in the midst of vineyards above the town and where the passion for regional treasures travels directly from the vineyard to the plate, so that the day in Brixen ends as enjoyably as it began in the bakery in the morning.

An inhabited winter: More than just a destination

What sets Brixen apart from many other Alpine destinations is its refusal to be a mere postcard idyll. In the cold months, the town does not function as an artificially illuminated backdrop for mass tourism, but as a deeply authentic space that can be described as an „inhabited winter“. It is sustained by people whose daily work - be it in the flour-dust warmth of the bakery, on the lonely slopes of the Plose or in the venerable silence of the Neustift monastery - forms a stable foundation of dedication and constancy.

Here, the old is not just managed like a museum, but preserved with clever thinking and respect for the future. These six individual lifestyles and perspectives flow together in Brixen to form a harmonious overall picture that makes one thing unmistakably clear: this city does not remain in a rigid state of shock in winter until spring redeems it. It lives, it works and it breathes calmly and deeply, carried by the constant pulse of its inhabitants and an almost thousand-year-old history that remains powerful and alive within the stone walls of the Eisack Valley.

FAQ: Bressanone in winter

Which ski area is best suited for a stay in Brixen/Bressanone?

The Plose is Brixen's local mountain and offers one of the longest runs in South Tyrol, the "Trametsch", which is a real highlight for advanced skiers in particular. Families and leisure skiers will also get their money's worth on the wide, sunny slopes and enjoy the unique panoramic view of the striking peaks of the Dolomites.

What makes a visit to Neustift Monastery in winter so special?

Neustift Abbey is one of the most important monasteries in Tyrol and captivates visitors in the cold season with its almost mystical silence amidst the snow-covered vineyards. Visitors can not only admire the magnificent baroque collegiate church and the historic cloister, but also taste the region's award-winning white wines in a cozy atmosphere in the monastery's own wine cellar.

What is the best way to get around Bressanone/Brixen and the surrounding area without my own car?

With the Brixen Card, which many partner businesses make available to their guests free of charge, travelers can use all public transport throughout South Tyrol as well as the cable car up the Plose free of charge. The town of Bressanone itself can also be easily explored on foot, as the historic streets of the old town and the most important sights are very close to each other.
