Italy and Austria set an example of diplomatic continuity. Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker, who took office in March 2025, paid his inaugural visit to Rome today. The exchange at the Quirinal Palace underlined the close ties between the two countries, which are characterized by historical and current issues.
Sergio Mattarella welcomed the Austrian head of government to his official residence. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also took part in the talks. Several historic events were highlighted: the 70th anniversary of both countries' membership of the United Nations, the 70th anniversary of the Austrian State Treaty and the 30th anniversary of Austria's membership of the EU. These anniversaries are seen as important milestones in the development of bilateral relations and European integration.
In addition to looking back on our shared history, current political issues dominated the discussions. Topics such as migration, the future of European competitiveness and the prospects of EU enlargement were on the agenda, as were the ongoing crises in Ukraine and the Middle East. Christian Stocker emphasized Italy's important role in the European Union and suggested offering Vienna as a possible venue for future peace negotiations in these conflicts.
The visit to Rome marks the start of a series of diplomatic appointments for the Austrian Federal Chancellor, who has increasingly focused on international contacts since taking office. In recent months, Stocker had already held talks in Berlin on migration issues and European security concerns. The meeting with Mattarella underlines Austria's interest in maintaining close relations with key states within the EU and intensifying coordination in central policy areas.
Christian Stocker heads a new coalition government in Austria consisting of the ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS. It has set itself the goal of strengthening European cooperation and a stable foreign policy. Sergio Mattarella repeatedly emphasizes the importance of joint European responses to global challenges, particularly against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions.
Today's meeting in the Quirinal Palace is thus exemplary of the close proximity between the two countries, whose relations are based on a long shared history and a strong European foundation. The talks will continue on Tuesday, when Stocker will meet Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to discuss further aspects of the European agenda.
