Seven months after the new Italian road traffic regulations came into force, the latest statistics paint a positive picture: there have been significantly fewer deaths, injuries and road accidents on Italy's roads. The data available to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which was collected by the traffic police and the Carabinieri, confirms a significant improvement in road safety.
In the period from December 14, 2024 to July 13, 2025, fatalities fell by 10.6 % (from 762 to 681), injuries by 3.6 % (from 24,143 to 23,185) and fatal accidents by 8.4 % (from 692 to 634) compared to the same period last year. In concrete terms, this means 81 fewer deaths, 958 fewer injuries and 58 fewer fatal accidents. The total number of road accidents fell by 1,034 to 40,532 - a decrease of 2.5 %.
The new road traffic regulations, which were largely driven forward by the Vice President of the Council of Ministers and Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, appear to be having their intended effect.
Despite an increase in alcohol checks - 482,045 tests with breathalyzers or similar devices were carried out in the seven months - the penalties for drink-driving (Art. 186 StVO) fell by 21.6 % to 8,989. This could indicate increased prevention or more conscious behavior on the part of road users.
The number of confiscated driving licenses is also remarkable: A total of 43,003 driving licenses were revoked, 21,543 of which were due to the use of a cell phone at the wheel. In addition, 28,562 vehicle licenses were confiscated.
Overall, the number of offenses reported fell by 14.9 % to 1,050,165, including 274,162 speeding offenses (a decrease of 19.8 %) and 54,143 seatbelt violations (a decrease of 8.5 %).
These positive results underline the effectiveness of the new regulations and the increased controls in terms of road safety on Italy's roads.
