The extreme heat wave currently gripping Italy is becoming a significant financial burden for households. A recent analysis by the Italian consumer association Assoutenti concludes that additional expenses for a family can rise to as much as 600 euros per month. This development is forcing many Italians to recalculate their household budgets.
Air conditioning and high electricity prices as cost drivers
The main cause of the skyrocketing costs is the early and intensive use of cooling devices. Due to the high temperatures, air conditioners, fans, and dehumidifiers are running at full capacity in many homes. The situation is exacerbated by the simultaneous rise in energy rates. Compared to the summer of 2025, electricity prices have already risen by 4 percent, which further increases the financial burden.
The geopolitical situation affects rates
According to the analysis, the rise in energy costs is not solely attributable to high demand. The consequences of the conflict in Iran and the associated closure of the Strait of Hormuz are cited as key factors behind the price increases. These geopolitical developments have a direct impact on energy markets and are thus leading to higher rates for end consumers in Italy. In light of this double burden, Assoutenti advises consumers to use electrical appliances consciously and efficiently in order to at least partially offset the cost increases.
