On the afternoon of July 10, 2025, a tragic accident occurred on the beach at Montalto di Castro Marina. A 17-year-old boy from Rome, who was on vacation there with his family, went to the open beach with his younger brothers. There he began to dig a deep hole in the sand. After a while, his brothers moved away in the direction of the campsite where the family was staying, leaving the teenager alone.
The boy's father, who was resting on a lounger at the campsite, eventually noticed his absence. When he questioned the boy's brothers, they led him to the spot on the beach where they had been playing together. A desperate search and digging operation began there, during which the father and bathers present tried to free the teenager. A short time later, rescue workers arrived, including an emergency medical team and a helicopter rescue team. But all efforts were unsuccessful; the teenager could only be recovered dead.
According to initial findings, the sand had collapsed over the teenager while he was apparently still in the hole or trying to move through it. Such sand holes or tunnels are considered particularly dangerous, as the sand can give way at any time and large quantities can fall on a person. Suffocation can occur very quickly, as the sand hardly allows any oxygen to pass through and it is extremely difficult to free oneself. In Italy, too, there are repeated warnings against such risky activities, as accidents of this kind occur time and again, especially on unguarded stretches of beach.
The local authorities have launched an investigation to clarify the exact circumstances of the accident. The body of the teenager has been taken to the cemetery in Montalto di Castro and is at the disposal of the public prosecutor's office, which intends to examine further steps. The municipality was deeply saddened and suspended planned events to pay their respects to the family. Many people in the region are shocked by the accident, which is a tragic reminder of the dangers of such seemingly harmless beach games.
