A pronounced cockroach infestation has residents of the upmarket Neapolitan districts of Vomero and Arenella on alert. Daily sightings of the insects on sidewalks and near garbage containers are causing displeasure and concern about possible health risks. Residents are therefore urgently demanding sustainable solutions from the city council.
The "red cockroach" (oriental cockroach) is spreading unchecked. Residents post videos on social media and report their fear of using their balconies. Cockroaches are known to carry bacteria, viruses and parasites. They can trigger asthma and allergies, which is particularly dangerous for children and the elderly.
The local health authority ASL Napoli 1 has already responded with an integrated control plan. This includes night-time treatment of the sewage system as well as daily interventions in public areas with larvicides and products against adult insects. Special night-time interventions are also planned for the affected districts of Vomero and Arenella. The city is calling on citizens to find out about the dates of the measures on its portal.
The main reasons for the mass proliferation are Naples' warm and humid summer climate, improper waste disposal and deficiencies in the sewage system, whose damaged areas provide ideal breeding grounds.
In addition to the current emergency measures, the residents are calling for a fundamental improvement in the city's hygiene infrastructure in order to contain the plague in the long term and restore the quality of life in the affected neighborhoods.
