A 63-year-old German tourist died on Friday at Cumpoltitu Bay, north of Bosa in Sardinia. The man collapsed in front of his companions. A Coast Guard boat brought him ashore, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
Collapse on Cumpoltitu Beach
According to La Nuova Sardegna, the incident occurred in the late morning of July 24. The 63-year-old man was on the beach at Cumpoltitu, about five kilometers north of Bosa in the province of Oristano, when he collapsed.
Accounts differ regarding the exact sequence of events. *La Nuova Sardegna* reports that the man was swimming when he began to feel ill. *Cagliaripad*, on the other hand, states that he was on a boat. The Sardinian media are in agreement, however, that his companions and other swimmers immediately alerted emergency services.
Coast Guard Takes Vacationer Across the Sea to Bosa
Cumpoltitu is located on the largely undeveloped west coast along the scenic route toward Alghero. According to the regional portal SardegnaTurismo, the bay can only be reached via a short, bumpy path through the macchia.
A Bosa Coast Guard boat therefore transported the tourist by sea to the dock on the Temo River. There, personnel from the 118 emergency service took over, and a rescue helicopter from the Sardinian rescue service Areus was on standby. According to local media reports, paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man for an extended period of time. His condition deteriorated before he could be transported to a hospital. Authorities did not initially release any information regarding the tourist’s identity.
Second Death on the Same Day in the Province of Oristano
On the same day, a few kilometers to the south, a lawyer from the province of Oristano died. According to L’Unione Sarda, the man was swimming at Is Arenas Beach near Narbolia when he suffered a circulatory collapse. Attempts to resuscitate him were also unsuccessful. The newspaper called it a dark day for the province’s beaches.
